I’m not a child, but I used to be one. And I’m trying to imagine being ten-years-old and having someone I trust tell me that bees sting people and other animals because Adam and Eve were naughty. And I’m trying to imagine not believing that if only I were good enough—if I would just stop stealing cookies and being mad at my brother and having those feelings when I look at my teacher—then bees might not sting us. And maybe animals wouldn’t kill and eat other animals. And maybe everything would be perfect, which is the way God wants everything—including me—to be.
What a strange and heavy burden. And it’s not just carried by children.
Job, when brought face-to-face with the brutal and difficult cosmos, heard and received the message: Not all things are about you and your supposed central role in the world. There are things you do not understand; there are needs you have never considered; there is suffering even you do not know. Having accepted this divine communiqué, delivered as it was with total clarity, Job straightaway repented in dust and ashes (42:6).
But here is a group of Christians who, when faced with the same suffering cosmos, double down on their anthropocentrism to the point of pathology. This is extreme, even obsessive, human-
centeredness: not only are we responsible for moral evil, we are responsible for natural evil too, even death, all of it. Everything that causes suffering in the world, whether directly or indirectly—animal violence obvious and inconspicuous, plate tectonics (think tsunamis), all disease, tornados—is, in the end, about us and our wickedness. There really is no Them—cosmos, animals, plants—at all, not really. There is, in the end, only Us.
